By registering a suitable domain name, you legally own that name. That means you have a permanent contact point for your web site and email. For business use there are three main suffixes (the bits at the end that really matter.
The first bit if these is the bit you will own, so if you name is Smith and Company, the ideal name with be smith.com, smith.co.uk and smith.eu. One of these would function as your public web site and email address, such as jollyrodger@smith.com
In the real world, almost all the obvious, and many of the useful names are already registered.
Registering a domain name is not difficult, the clever part is finding a name which is available, which is suitable, and which you can register the main name as at least .com and .co.uk.
If your company name is ZE1XYZ (Scotland) Limited, registering ze1xyzscotlandlimited.co.uk is just silly. ZE1XYZ.com and ZE1XYZ.co.uk would be much more sensible. Domain names need to be clear and short.
Similarly registering only ze1xyx.co.uk will, sooner or later, result in someone else registering ze1xyx.com and picking up the traffic meant for your site, but mistyped by the user.

.com, .eu, org and .net domains are charged at £10 per name
.co.uk, .org.uk, .net.uk are charged at £6 per name
Thereafter hosting fees (from zero and upwards depending on what you need) and registrar renewal fees will apply annually.
